Toyota bB

This is an other new project from me, to start working with Zero Paints.

I also decided for a cheap and simple kit, and found this Toyota bB.

http://albums.modelbrouwers.nl/coppermine/albums/userpics/10027/inhoud_001_%28Medium%29~20.jpg

The kit contains not many parts, but some extra decals and carpet for the floor made my day :D

I'll use some XS-Tuning 17'' wheels for this car.

The color will be solid Jet Black from Zero Paints. I also will use the dragon decals.

These cars never apealed to me. Everytime i see one, i think of a clown car. Either way it is a good choice to practice on. Cheap and easy to build.

Keep us posted kris, i think the wheels suit it well.

Haha yes that's the right name of this car. CLOWN CAR.
Somehow I like ugly cars. Just like the Daihatsu Move and Honda city.

If you search for toyota bB on google, you really got some nice JDM cars :) But factory stock they don't got my attention either :)

Today I painted the zero paints primer on the body. It is a bit rough but after sanding (like in the description) with 6000 grid it is smooth enough for the black paint.

You can see some of the panellines are not straight anymore..... I scribed them out because they were nearly visible, but because they not so deep, I made more damage than deeper panellines.... I tryed to fix it with some putty and try to made them again but it was stil shit :D

Any tips for making new panellines?

This model is just a testcar to start working with zero paints, so these faults are tolerated to me :D

Today I painted the body with a couple layers Jet Black from Zero Paints.

I also did 2 layers clearcoat on it, but the result wasn't any good at all. I got spiderwebs from this paint which circles all trough my paintboot. I use the Zero Paints pre-thinned clearcoat. Anyone got this before, or knows a solution to this problem?

I have had the spider-web problem using lacquer before. The problem for me was I was that I needed a lot more thinner. The stuff I was using needed 4 parts thinner to 1 part clear and I had forgot and mixed it 2 parts thinner to 1 part clear which made the mix way too thick.

From the picture it looks like your paint job is still ok I would just try adding more thinner to your clear and see how it sprays.

Other people don't have this problem with the same pre-thinned clearcoat. It is thin enough. Maybe it is going better tomorrow.

Oh, and the pics above are not with clearcoat, only with black paint.

On thing I forgot to mention is that if your paint has sit a while, some of the thinner \ reducer could have evaporated out.

pressure too high, the clear-coat dries before reach the body, you need less pressure since the clear-coat is pre-thinned.

I clearcoated the body with the Zero paints pre-thinned clearcoat. I think this is the worst clearcoat I ever used. I got spiderwebs all the time, and I tryed everything from lowering pressure, and other distances.

Here's the result:

http://www.modelbrouwers.nl/albums/coppermine/albums/userpics/10027/decals_004_%28Medium%29~2.jpg

Like shit as I said. But I managed to sand the body smooth and polished it, so it looks a lot better now, but it´s still not how I want it. The pre-thinned clearcoat will be sold or something cause I ordered the 2K clear from Zero paints yesterday. This clearcoat is very good as I heard from some members of my club. They also had the same problems as I had with the pre-thinned shit.

I also painted the windowtrims on the windows. The maskings are very great from Tamiya.

Today I finished the interior. The thinner destroyed an sealing from my airbrush, so I had to wait for some new ones. Yesterday they came, so I could spray the interior.

I used yellow and grey and some black and aluminium details.

The floor had to be covered with some carpet which was included in the kit, but I ruined it all, except for the middle section. From some plasticcard I made some new templates and covered them with grey interiorflocking. I think it looks good now.

The next i'll do is the chassis. A small modification is necessary for the new wheels. Maybe I should paint the wheel spokes in red or something?

Happy christmas everybody!

Nice interior, only the cell is to flat, maybe you should glue it out of 2 or 3 layers it would be thicker.

As for wheels - maybe red spoke faces and yellow spoke sides, and stock chrome lip (it would match the colors of the dragon) ?

Hi Kris!

Before you give up on the Zero 1K Lacquer, try to thin it down a little with Zero cellulose thinners or regular hardware store cellulose thinners. (Zero is not that picky about thinners) to a ratio of 2 parts thinner to 1 part clear. And spray this mix at about 1 Bar (9-10 psi). Do 3-4 "mistcoats" i.e. not wet ones, this is just to get a semi-gloss finish and then let these coats dry completely. (about 2 days). This is to protect the basecoat from the next step.

After this you can go over any rough spots in the finish with some 2000 grit wet sanding paper or Micromesh. Then you thin the clear a bit more about 3 parts thinner to 1 part clear to help it flow better. And apply one or two wetcoats, remember to be careful as the risk of getting runs and sags increase with more thinner.

This will get you better results hopefully. The Zero clear and primer is VERY thick in the bottle and if you want a good result it has to be thinned to be sprayed in the airbrush. Straight out of the bottle the "pre thinned" is more suited to real 1:1 sprayguns or airbrushes with large nozzles. Like 0.8 mm or more.

It is also quite important to not "paint" the clear on like you would when
you´re spraying regular paint. I have found that it works best for me if you try to "shower" on the clear. Backing off with the airbrush a little (to about 10-15 cm. from the model) and spraying a little heavier to avoid orange peel and slowly build up a nice gloss.

The best way to learn is to practice alot to learn how to use the clear with your setup and airbrush. But try thinning it down. It usually helps.

Cheers!

Emil

Thanks Emil,

I ordered the basecoat thinner this week, but also the 2K clear from Zero. Off course I'll give it a second chance to use that 1K clear. The only strange thing is that I use the same airbrush, and all other stuff as two fellowed modellers and they both don't have any problems at all.

I hope it will be better when I thin it some more. Like you said, the primer was indeed very thick.

To bad Hiroboy is closed at the moment, but you will see some updates coming when my order arives.

Kris.

One word of caution...

Be very careful with the basecoat thinners...these are stronger than the cellulose thinners and can make the underlying paint "curl up" if you apply wetcoats. It can also etch the plastic if your unlucky. I´d suggest only using this with the basecoat paints to give them more "bite" onto the primer as these can be fragile and rub off easily with handling. I suggest you use cellulose thinners for primer and clear.

also be careful when using the 2K....very nasty fumes from that one.

Good luck!

Emil

I got a tip to put some 2K clear on the body, but only the bumpers were fine. The body was screwed up.... so I put everything in the brakefluid.

After repainting and adding the flame decals (from the kit), another mistake happend...

I shaked some zero paint bottles on my desk, but didn't noticed I was just splashing everything with zero paint :D I also hitted some drups on the body and couldn't remove them anymore. So I picked the body up and putted it again in the brakefluid.

Yesterday I primed the body again, and today I already added some Jet Black again.
