Mitsubishi FTO GR

From a friend I got some automotive paints for free. So I wanted to experiment with these paints, and therefore I use a simple and cheap kit.

I found this Mitsubishi FTO GR in my pile:

http://albums.modelbrouwers.nl/coppermine/albums/userpics/10027/inhoud_001_%28Medium%29~19.jpg

You don't see them often, and most people don't know anything about this car. I think it is a very cool car. I also have seen about 3 wips of this car so even in modelling world this car is rare :D

The kit contains a few parts, but they look good.

The original wheels are awfull so I replace them by some nice Aoshima Gram Lights.

I want to make a facelift frontbumper on it, which look like this:

The color I might use is Matchstick Red Pearl from Volkswagen.

Good choice of kit Kris! FTOs are very cool cars, it's a shame we don't get to see more of them. Good luck with this one.

I actually think these cars are way cool. I think i like em more than the 3000gt. But we never got them in the states, the body lines are aero and round. I think kaho built one with the bodykit your looking at replicating.

Good luck with it and the color should look good on it.
PS I would go with a rear wing, as it looks a little bare.

Yes I saw Kaho his thread and I use his wip as reference for my project.

I'll add a rearspoiler to it, but I'm not sure which one. The original spoiler looks cool, but maybe I have a nice spare one.

If I could have another chance at my FTO project, I would move the 4 round lights a little lower. I used the original spots for the early model lights and it seemed to come out a couple mm too high.

Good luck and have fun with this build, this is a pretty nice kit. =)

There is only one in the states as far as I know. Andy Goodman owned it last I checked, it was purple with a Veilside body kit.

Now c'mon Kris, we want updates! :grinyes:

Yesterday I started to modify the frontbumper.

First I drilled some holes for the new foglights. I putted some aluminium tubing in it. I don't know if the size is correct, but it looks good enough for me.

I also removed the center section from the frontbumper, and I sanded the original frontlip away.

The base for the new frontlip was also glued to the bumper, but today I removed it for one with a better look.

http://www.modelbrouwers.nl/albums/coppermine/albums/userpics/10027/bumperwerk_003_%28Medium%29.jpg

Because I removed the center of the bumper, I also removed the original mounting for the chassis. So i made a new one from tubing.

Today I added some Milliput Grey on it and now I have to wait till it's full hard.

I love two part epoxy, great stuff miliput. Thats one thing i hate about fujimi kits, sometimes im afraid to cut out the grills and make them better due to the mounting points behind them. Looks good though, now the frustrating part sanding. Good luck.

I personally think the lip sticks out a bit to far, but it will likely not look so exaggerated if you do a crazy body kit along with the front lip.

The red you have chosen is BEAUTIFUL! I have a friend that works with me with that color on a new Rabbit (golf)

Yeah i know the lips sticks out to much, but I already shortened it now. It can better stick out to much than it wil be to short :)

Today I sanded the body and also did a attempt to sand the moldlines.

I have to fill up a few small faults in the bumper and at the photos i see I must sand a few moldlines again

Yesterday I started with removing the moldlines from the interiorparts. After that I made some masking templates for the interior because I want a 2 tone red/black interior.

After that I first painted the seats with Revell SM 330 Semigloss Red. Today I added the masking templates and painted everything semigloss black Revell SM 302.

This is the result so far. I have to correct some minor spots with a brush before I'll add the interiorflocking on it.

I'm thinking about mixing some grey and black interiorflocking together to get a nice carpet. Let's see how that turns out.

Today I finished the interior. I kept it basic and clean, but only added a mix of black and silver interiorflocking. I think it looks cool ;)

Today I clearcoated the body 3 times. First layer was a thin one, and the other 2 where a bit thicker.

I used 2K laquer from Sikkens, which is automotive paint as well.

A few small dusts are in the last layer, so i hope to sand them away tomorrow. Than I also can add the decals, and add a final clearcoat.

Loving the paint! Too bad it takes a lot more effort to polish 2K clear than the thinner clears. Did you work on the headlight surrounds on the body?

Yeah 2K clear is hard to polish I discovered a couple minuts ago :D But it don't need much polish.

What should I've done with the headlight surrounds than?

So I finally did some work on this car.

First I painted the chassis and his parts. Yesterday I modified them a bit to fit the new brakes and wheels. I also wheatered it a bit.

http://www.modelbrouwers.nl/albums/coppermine/albums/userpics/10027/body_af_001_%28Medium%29~3.jpg

I also masked the body, to paint the windowtrims. This was my first attempt because I have a airbrush now, so I don't need to brush it anymore. I was really suprised how smooth it was.

I also placed the lights and other clearparts. In fact the whole body is finished :D

For the mesh behind the frontbumper, I used PE mesh.

With the airbrush you can paint more directly to the surface, than a spraycan. For example the windowtrims are much easier to paint with airbrush, cause you can control the pressure, so your paint won't run under the tape etc. I also save a lot of paint, cause a spraycan always give more paint then neccessary.

I was always affraid of an airbrush, because I'm quite good in using spraycans. Buying and using a airbrush was for me a big step, but I really love it, and still blaim myself of not buying this earlier :D
