Hi, I have an automatic starter bought, the ProStart 2-in-1 Remote Starter and Keyless Entry. I was told by one mechanic that he would install it for $130, but the Grand Prix would also need a 'bypass' and 'door locks', which would cost me $90 more.
Is this true, or is he just trying to take advantage of me?

Welcome to AF. Aftermarket remote start units and GM cars with Pass-lock do not play well. The guy is correct, you'll need an add-on module and an extra key installed in it to bypass the Passlock system. Unless you live in an igloo, I'd suggest forgetting about the remote start.

Good one Rich but I think he lives close to igloo conditions up North in Canada so a remote start would be nice and add an engine block heater plus battery blanket.
BTW - I thought the 1999 and up had Passkey III?

I have the transponder type in my car. So does Natalie on her 02 grand Prix SE.
For her birthday a few months back I installed the crimestopper fortress fs-80.

Its installed and works 100%. Only thing is that we didn't use the aftermarket alarm and instead I interfaced it to re-arm the factory one when she locks the doors. Also the interface I went with for the PK3 system was Pats-GM. It basically sits on top of the PK3 transponder and when triggered by the remote start system, it produces a signal like another key. Only thing is, when installing, you have to program it into the cars PCM as though you would another key (turn car on for a minute with working key, ground a wire, then start the car with the remote starter).

Maybe I'll try and get a youtube video of it in action. Its pretty neat! But definatly a lot of work to install.
