Hot Tanking

Okay, this may seem like a dumb question, but I need to know...
What is hot-tanking? I imagine that it's some sort of chemical/acid bath for cleaning engine parts and stuff, but I'm not 100% certain.
If that IS the case, then what parts can I have hot tanked? I want to find a way to clean up the D16Y8 I've got on the stand before putting it all together, and was hoping this would be the answer... So, would I have to remove all the internals before hot-tanking the block (pistons, rods, crankshaft, etc) or can I leave them in? What about the head? Would I have to remove the valvetrain and all that?

gee looks like its been a few hours and no one knows..i know what you mean though the motors are so damn dirty it would be so sweet to clean one up if there were a simpler way, most my friends think its dumb its just looks and im like exactly u like fast and dont mind it looking like shit, but i want both

Word :sun:
Well, I figured out what it was, but it looks like I've gotta remove all the internals and crap first... what a pain in the ass.... Hahahaha I have no idea what I'm doing...

Yes remove all the internals to hot tank the block, clean the internals up with brake cleaner, or simple green works very well too....a shop can degrease the head, but im not sure if they put it in a hot tank or not...if they do you will have to remove everything from it also...

So, how hard would it be for me to remove all the internals and everything? Well... I guess removing them isn't the problem, it's putting it all back together that's got me worried... I just want to do all the work myself (or as much as I possibly can).

bloody hell remove it all, yea i know im in the process of taking apart a motor for fun so im paying as much attention to where i take it off and how it was before i took it off, because everyone tells me its putting together i have to worry about, but this engines got many weird things like things that wouldnt be there or be like that if it was a running good engine , i just bummed it off a friend its broken, just to learn

Well, I know where everything goes and everything, but just wouldn't know how to make sure the crank pulley lines up with the crank-shaft properly so that the timing will be right and stuff like that... I just don't want to screw the whole engine by putting something in wrong or whatever... But I am learning quite a bit in the process...
