Power steering problem

My '93 Prizm was making a squeeling noise from the power steering pump and would get louder and p/s would cut in and out and the pump itself would stop occasionally when turning while parked or really slow speeds so I picked up a pump at a junkyard and installed it and now have no power steering at all. I drained as much fluid as possible and turned the wheel from lock to lock too many times to count and nothing but an odd tick from the pump. I disconnected the pressure line with the car idling there was just a trickle of fluid coming out(not the spray I was expecting). So did I do something wrong or is it a bad pump? Thanks
