Rearview Mirror: Remove / Install

I'm replacing the rear view mirror. FSM says "Insert small [presumably a flat-head] screwdriver into slot on the bottom of the base...
"...pull screwdriver rearward... Until... mirror snaps away from the... bracket." Been there-- done that; still can't get the damned thing to come-off!!!

I'm familiar w/ the internal "mechanics" of the thing: U-shaped clip laying flat on the mirror [female] side must be depressed (toward the cab = away f'm the windshield)-- I've performed this procedure on the same car before, and it was a pain in the rump that time too HOWEVER, THIS TIME I had so much trouble w/ it, I ended-up cracking the G.D. windshield!!!

Anybody have any "tips/tricks" on how to do this, W/O breaking the $500+ windshield?!

Additionally, I noticed that the Svc Manual uses the term "...snaps [off the windshield bracket]...", when removing though, it says to "...slide [the mirror onto the windshield bracket]..." to describe how to reinstall it. So, does that mean I should be concentrating on pulling ("snapping") the mirror straight-off the bracket, or should I be "slide(ing)" it off, as logic would dictate?

Thanks, in advance!
