'97 Won't Start

I've never had any problem with my '97 Civic, but tonight it just wouldn't start. The sound wasn't the typical engine not turning over, but rather a high-pitched sound like something wasn't catching (I don't know what I'm talking about, in case you couldn't tell). I tried to jump start it, but no dice. I ended up having to push it across the street because of street cleaning tomorrow.
Any thoughts? I'd appreciate it...

first off, if you're engine was turning over why did you try to jump start it? i have a 97 civic also. mine cut out right in the middle of me driving and then wouldn't start back up one time. i towed it to the dealership automotive shop and they had to replace my ignition coils. it was like 210$....
p.s. how many miles on your odometer?

I don't know, I just thought I'd try it for lack of anything better to do...
The car's at about 105K.

ever think it could be your starter. i mean its hard to tell because we not there. but u said the engine isnt turning over like it normally does, theres a high pitch sound
like is the engine cranking? or is the starter making that noise and the engine isnt even turning at all ?

It sounds like the starter is trying to do its job, but no, I don't think the engine is cranking. I read something somewhere that made it sound like the pinions in the starter might be worn down. But if that was the case, I think I would have noticed something before it got to this point. It's always started just fine before.

I'd take off your starter and take it in to Auto Zone and have them test it, I know they do it for free around here.

I agree, you could at least feel the starter kicking in. If it doesn't sound like the motor is turning over at all or you can't feel it trying to start, the starter pinion gear isn't kicking out and turning the flywheel. If it is turning over, your problem will more than likely be the coil or ignitor.

I decided just to have the car towed to a shop. The tow truck driver came and was able to start it by pumping the gas peddle a lot. He said the problem was that I was parked on a slight hill and hadn't driven the car for a while. It works fine now. Thanks for all the suggestions. I still think it's weird, though, because it had only been parked for about 2 or 3 days, and the hill isn't that steep. Oh well.
