trans slow to engage in forward

1992 4 cyl auto. Transmission is slow to engage in forward. engages in reverse right away. once it engages in forward it shifts with no problem. sometimes it engages right a way but usually it takes from 30 seconds to several minutes. Does anyone know what is the cause?
