We recently purchased our 17 year old son a 97 celica, I LOVE IT!! Problem, when he goes out in the morning to start it, it sounds like a is belt squealing really really bad. We changed the tensioner and it stopped for about a week and then returned. We sprayed the belt with belt dressing to determine which belt it was, one at a time, it was the one that goes to the alternator, so we put a new belt on it, the sound stopped this time for a few days and returned. This happens whether it is wet or dry, but seems to be worse when dry. The sound lasts for a few minutes and usually goes away. I thought it sounded (the actual sound) like power steering. The sound does get worse when we turn the steering wheel, then when the steering wheel is straightened it goes away. My son said now it periodically will do it will drive for no apparant reason and go away. Any ideas??
thanks!

in my opinion it sounds as though the belt may not be tight enough and as the spindle are turning the belt has just enough slack on it for there to be some slippage. this happened on a diff car of mine, the belt dressing did help for awhile but when it rained the noise came back. have a mechanic check it to make sure all elts have the correct amount of tension. dont know much about celicas yet, but on every other car i hav owned the power steering pump can be adjusted. should be a simple fix, good luck, now im just waiting for some one to reply back to my post about my rattling in my 95 celica, cant make it to the shop till after the holiday. lets hope it holds up!!!! good luck
