new trans new problems

I have a 1994 suburban built in canada.
it has the 4L60e trans. I had a new trans installed and it worked fine for a day. now will not get 3rd or 4th. it goes into nuteral from second.
I have replaced the 3-4 shift solenoid and tested the wiring harness from the trans to the powertrain module and it is all good.
how can I test the powertrain module? what else should I be loking at?
the speedo works and I can shift to first and drive then shift to second and it will drive but if I put the shifter to 3rd (D) or 4th (DD) then it goes to nuteral.
update... got the trans replaced on waranty and the replacement trans lasted about the same amount of miles. now its lost 3 and 4

Sounds to me like the 3/4 Clutch Pack is toast. A shift solenoid will usually cause it to not shift (not shift into Neutral).
Is the trans under warranty?

all the symptoms pointed toward a shift solenoid but I changed them and its still the same. the trans is under waranty.
the builder wanted me to have it checked out at a trans specialist.
so I did that and he said its in the wiring.
so I am currently going over the wiring.

I really dont think you are looking at an electrical problem. Electrical problems usually cause limp mode (3rd gear). From what you describe, it sounds as though the shift from 2-3 is being commanded from the computer, second is disengaging but the 3-4 clutches are not applying for third gear. This could be a leaky 3-4 clutch piston, sticky shift valve, or damaged sealing ring on the turbine shaft. I have even seen transmissions with too much end play on the turbine shaft causing leaks at the sealing rings in the pump when the shaft walks in and out during driving. I would get it back to the builder.

If he did find a wiring issue, my question is how come he did not tell you exactly what wires/circuit is defective ?
did he actually get hands on diagnostic/troubleshooting ?
or perhaps just hook up a diagnostic code reader only..

they only did a code reading.

they only did a code reading.
thats the problem..If I had the wiring for your model year I would help you. there are resistance readings. these are used to find the problem IF it is in the wiring. I suspect as previously mentioned the 3/4 clutches got screwed up somehow in the rebuild.
which is by the way a very common failure when this transmission fails.
fluid contamination is what can cause you problems.since it is a 1994 was the torque converter replaced ? tranny coolant lines flushed ? if not there is a good chance debris is causing all this...
do you have the dtc failure codes pulled ?
I just remembered that the 4l60-e trannys has some variations with year/model. my 2000 sil. has a switch mounted on the side of the transmission where the linkage is. if this were bad it could cause no reverse / drive depending on what contacts got damaged..with the re-build and handling this is easy to damage..
a common failure with my year is no reverse and the switch for some reason is a componet that has been reported..1994 however I have no details if this would apply..

I went throught all the electricals for the trans and found nothing wrong.
I put it all back together and its the same, no 3 or 4.
I did notice that if I rev it hard it will try and drive in 3rd
so I agree its the clutch pack or something related to that
the trans came with a converter. the lines were flushed.
there was black silt in the pan when I took it off and the fluid is dark between red and brown. there was no signs of metal.
I have had the pan of 2 times and both times there was black stuff in the bottom of the pan . I put new fluid in and when I took the pan off the second time the fluid was turning brown. I had driven the truck to have the codes read at a shop thats 10 miles away.

with those details looks like it was not done correctly. hope this tranny guy takes care of it for you...

Were there any trouble codes present????? If so, what were they?? On a 94 there will be 2 digit trouble codes. Tell me what codes came up. Its still sounding like an internal failure to me though.

so I got a replacement trans on waranty and paid again to have it fitted
this trans lasted about the same amount of miles and now its doing the same thing. there is fine metal in the oil and the oil is turning brown.
is it just my rotten luck or is something realy wrong here

If the same people did the work ,,you got the same results ...no mystery to me if those are the facts....

How come the shop didn't do the R&R for free, it's their transmission that went bad ???

Did they check the cooler flow??? I know you said they flushed the lines but did they check the flow?? If the transmission cooler in the radiator does not have sufficient output, the transmission will overheat and burn up.

I just re read this posting from the top....question is , " did this tranny have a new torque converter" ? did they test record the transmission pressure ?
with an old torque converter it will take little time to wear out a newly rebuilt tranny....
also it is nearly impossible to clean out these torque convertors, as well as the internal wear....new is required especially when this old.

the trans was supplied by the same builder. he is in another state.
the lines were power flushed again and checked for flow
yes a new converter was used
the first time I got the local mechanic to do the work. this time I took it to a trans specialist. there is metal present in the oil and black stuff again
1st and 2nd still works fine its 3rd and 4th that have gone out again

Oh, hell yes! it sounds like someone is puttingthe clutchpacks in wrong. That black stuff is the fiber composite from hard parts.

so there is no way it could be the TCM or some other sensor
I am about to have a 3rd trans installed and I hope this one lasts a few years
