My neighbor just bought a 2001 Buick Lesabre that someone tried to steal. They slammed the ignition. He just bought another ignition on ebay and I'm going to help him install it. I was wondering how to reprogram the ignition cause I'm sure it has PassKey security. Can you give me specific simple instructions to reprogram this ignition? Thanks a lot.

It does have passkey, what part are you replacing the key cylinder?

We are replacing the key cylinder for sure and maybe the ignition switch too. My neighbor bought a whole used steering column on ebay so that we would have all the parts that we need. We haven't taken it apart yet though to see the extent of the damage. Is there a reprogram that we can do at home without taking it to the dealer? Thank you so much.

Sorry, but you would need a Tech II scan tool to program.

You could try the PK relearn first. Turn the key on leave it on for 10 minutes ( battery connected of course.). Remove key, then repeat the process 2x more, this may allow the system to relearn the new key.

Here you go. No Tech II needed.

I found the programming info. You can relearn most GM cars and trucks. Here's the link. Maybe it should be a sticky in the forums. Great information.

We have suggested using the relearn procedure here for several years; however, the problem is, sometimes it works & sometimes it don't!
