my generator light stays on and the gauge doesnt read 14 volts but the battery dosent go dead

Use this simple test to determine if you fault lies in your battery or alternator. Always test the battery directly using a volt meter.
Battery test: with engine off battery should be no less than 12 VDC
Alternator Test: with engine running battery voltage should be above the reading you had with the engine off or around 13VDC
If battery test fails and alternator test passes= bad battery ( take battery to autozone for a load test)
If battery test passes and alternator test fails= bad alternator ( take alternator to autozone for a load test)
If both fail= take battery and alternator to autozone for load test
