Cruise Control

2005 Outback 2.5i Wagon, manual

I have a prob with the cruise control on my Outback (I just go this car the other day).

When I am using the CC it will be on for a while but will go out of SET mode. I called the dealer and they said it could be a vacuum leak or the main unit might need to be replaced (at $700).

Would anyone know where I could look for the vacuum leak? I don't even know what to look for on this car in terms of where to find the CC unit.

Any help is appreciated.

I would be slow to accept that the problem is a "vacuum" leak. There are many reasons that disable the cruise control under normal conditions. Any of these could be erroneously engaging and killing the CC. foot brake switch, e brake switch, transmission selector (autotrans) clutch (manual) etc. So a dynamic check of the control lines to the vacuum switch, if it is disengaging then it is an electrical problem and not a vacuum leak problem.
