P1406 & Rough Engine

Hi. My 2001 Escape 146000 miles just developed a rough engine and no power. OBDII says P1406. Any first guesses? DPFE valve? How do I check? Anything else to look for?

Looked for loose hoses and found an open rubber hose looped up to near the top of the ATF fill tube. It's secured with a clip to the fill tube but just loops around and back down with no termination. Is this normal?

A bad EGR valve or gasket can act like a broken vacuum line on a Intake.
The PCU & engine doesn't like unmetered air, so DTC's will be thrown.

Some Technicians will use a smoke test, others may use a spray brake cleaner to pin point umetered air leaks, while the engine is running.

In your opinion would a bad DPFE sensor cause, in itself, a bad loss of power?

Yes, it has thrown a code P1401. However, do you think a bad sensor would cause an extreme loss of power?

1) Visual inspect for unmetered Air leaks.

The rubber hose looped near the AFT tube?

I always look for plastic (Air duct), rubber, and seals for PCV + EGR systems, that can go bad after 9-years.

The EGR + DPFE is probably good, it just probably a bad gasket or seal.
