Front drive shaft spinning

On what transfer case does the front drive shaft not spin when the truck is moving? 88 and up trucks.

Part time transfer cases.

Most transfer cases in 2W the front drive shaft is not locked in.
But if front axel is locked in the drive shaft will be locked to front rear end.

Isn't the drivers side axle always connected to the front diff causing it to spin the shaft?

I thought a shift on the flys, the front always spun. Didn't know you had to stop to shift to 4x4 on some models.

If front axel is unlocked the spider gears spin and not drive shaft.

The good book say you can shift from 2W to 4W at higher speeds but stop or under 3 MPH on a 4W HIGH TO 4W LOW SHIFT.
And do not use 4W on dry payment

But common sense tells me it is not a good idea to shift into 4W at higher speeds.

So how does it start spinning the front shaft from 0 to 40 without breakage on the part time?

since you have an older 4X4 I would slow down before engaging the 4WD HI from 2wd...

since I have the auto mode in my 2000..I put this on when driving on snow/ice or very very heavy rain...I assume it is not damaging since I cannot in any way feel the engagement of the 4WD when slipping..

the only time I use the locked 4X4 hi or low is when I am pulling the boat out / up the boat ramp...

IF FRONT AXEL IS LOCKED IN THE DRIVE SHAFT WILL BE LOCKED IN TURN ALL TIME OR IF TRANSFER CASE IS PUTTING POWER TO FRONT AXEL.

In auto mode the power to front drive shaft is only as needed .

You are jumping from old transfer cases to new auto transfer cases.
They are different.
