blowin' black smoke

I was racing a friend of mine today (he drives a bmw320) and beat him....I know they're not that fast.... but anyways afterwards we pulled into a gas station and he told me that my car was blowing black smoke out of the exhaust whenever i really got on it. Any clue what the reason could be ? He said dirty injectors but I don't know. The car runs fine at least as far as I can tell. Anyone have any ideas ?

black smoke = rich, unburnt fuel

if it was white smoke youd be fucked

So what do I have to do ? I know my Ignition timing is advanced pretty far. Should I just retard that or what else could it be ? Is it possible that my injectors could cause that if they're dirty? Would some of that injector cleaner stuff you pour into your gastank help in that case ?
Oh and what would be wrong if it was blowing white smoke? Just curious ? I guess I didn't pay enough attention in automechanics....

all stock ecus run rich at wot, i wouldnt worry about it

white smoke in cold weather is just condensation. otherwise white smoke would mean your engine is burning oil. could be a number of things. worn rings, valve seals, bad head gasket, etc.

Correction, White smoke means it is burning water, such as a leaking head gasket and such so water/condensation is getting into the combustion chamber

If it was blue smoke it would be rings, head gasket, valve seals....

If it would only smoke blue at startup then that would usally mean valve seals.... if it would only smoke white at startup that is usally leaky headgasket - leaking water.

Black smoke is not bad, dont worry about it it just means your car is running a little rich, thats better then running lean if you think about it.....

Black = rich
White = oil (fried piston rings)
Green (right?) = coolant (blown head gasket)

Black can be fixed, but white and green are gonna cost you a lot.

I had the rich burning with the oil burning for lots of fun. It'll be worth it though. Just wait.
