Do you have an AOD or AODE transmission? If it's the AODE, you may want to check the MLPS sensor for proper function. This is the electronic sensor that communicates with the ECU to command the proper gear. In both transmissions, you should check the linkage and make sure it's taught.

Also, is the fluid up to the proper point? Remember to check when the engine is running and transmission fluid is at normal operating temperature.

With any Ford transmission, you can unplug the bulkhead connector, or the one that goes to the transmission case, and you will have reverse and one forward gear. In your case however, the forward engagement would not be limited electrically.
When you put it into drive, only the forward clutch is engaged. So a leaking or failed forward clutch would be suspected. Luckily, this transmission has a port to check not only the line pressure, but the pressure to the forward clutch as well.
If you can get your hands on a gauge, check the line pressure at the port on the drivers side and then check the pressure at the port marked FWD on the passenger side. If the FWD pressure is more than 10 PSI lower than line pressure, the forward clutch is leaking.
