Does anyone have any tips for keeping the supercharger in top form,

Well, superchargers are a sealed unit so you cant do much to them. They usually start making noise after about 60-80,000 miles. just make sure you keep oil in it and dont ride it too incredibly hard.

I have a 97 GTP with 98k miles on it. I've used Mobil 1 synthetic throughout its entire life so far. The engine runs great and is very quiet, just like the day I got it.

I am only now noticing some low rpm rumbling from the super charger and was wondering if this was typical of these Eaton chargers as they aged.

I pulled the belt off and checked the charger by hand and the bearings feel fine, but I can definately feel some backlash in the gears which I believe is where this noise is coming from.

Since my 100k mile extended warranty is about due to expire, I was just trying to determine if this low rpm rumble is typical or if I should take it in for a check at the (gulp) dealer.

Have you ever thought about replacing the charge oil! Just like engine oil it gets old and should be replace.

Hmmm, interesting. The owner's manual never mentions anything about "changing" the oil in the charger, only checking it every 30k and filling as necessary.

So do you unbolt the charger and turn it upside down to drain out the oil, or do you prefer to use a straw and suck it out?


Is there anyone out there that actually OWNS one of these with high miles?

I use a hand vaccum pump attached to a jar! It sucks out the oil right into the jar!

I commend you on reading your owners manual not many people do!

GM does not spell out alot of things that you need to do like flushing your brake fluid! Your brake fluid is hydroscopic which means it sucks out mositure in the air! Its up to you to decide what services you should perform! But all oil breaks down after time and heat what makes you think charger oil is any different? The charger oil is cheap how much is a new charger? Wouldn't changing the oil make sense"?

How often do you change your oil and filter?
How often do you change your fuel filter, air filter?
Do you obey what is written in the owners manual?

Most people get their oil changed whenever they feel like it. Not when it is due! You can't play both sides of the fence with your maintentance!

Well, I am not going to debate the merits of changing the oil in the charger. Fresh oil is always better. The fact of the matter is, no one has yet to actually answer my question. Perhaps no one keeps their vehicles past 100k miles.

All the vehicles I've ever owned have gone past 200k miles, so I suspect there's nothing wrong with my maintenance practices.

Now if someone that has any knowledge regarding Eaton chargers can tell me if a low rpm rumble is common with high mileage, then my question will have been answered.

At this point, I am not overly worried since the rumble goes away once I crack the throttle and break idle speed. However, should I get a collection of GTP owners that have 100k+ miles on their chargers saying that this noise is not common, then you better believe I'll be down to the dealer having it checked out. (not that they could find they're backsides if they were on fire)

Since we can't seem to get beyond the "changing of the charger oil" topic, perhaps you'd like to share the oil capacity of this particular Eaton charger. I'm assuming it will take several bottles more than just the one.

The charger oil is a special oil. Go to your local GM parts/service department and tell them what you need. It comes in a small plastic bottle about the size of a small bottle of suntan lotion. For topping off the oil level in your charger, it lasts a long time.

The manual states to check the oil level in your charger every 30k, but I like to do mine every 20k miles. It doesn't go down much, but it does go down over time, so don't run it dry.

In my talks with GM service, they all seem to agree that these chargers are rather trouble free so long as you keep oil in them.

You still haven't answered my previous question regarding the capacity of oil for this type of charger. But that's okay... I doubt you'd know and I certainly am not about to believe you anyway. Perhaps you should hit the books again and earn that ASE logo you so proudly stamp on your posts.
