Paint advice

HELP! I'm having problem with paint peeling. I use halfords primer, and have been using Zero paints over it. on normal kits this is fine. but I have recently been given a multimedia kit, and both with the resin and white metal when I mask off (using Tamiya masking tape), when I remove the tape the paint peels back to the bare surface in certain areas. This is really frustrating me. I thought Halfords primer would stick. Am I doing something wrong, or using the wrong paint?

Presumably you gave the parts a VERY thorough wash in detergent and diluted bleach to remove the mold release agent? If not, this is probably at least part of your problem. Mold relase agent on parts is almost as bad as having them Teflon coated - paint 'aint gonna stick.

Assuming that you did wash the parts thoroughly then the problem is the primer. Regular primers will not bite into resin and metal the same way they will into plastic. You are probably best getting either some Hiroboy etch priner which shoudl work on both metal and resin or perhaps some Gunze resin primer and Gunze metal primer.

TBH I have found that regular Tamiya primer works just fine on resin kits if they are well prepped i.e. washed, lightly sanded with e.g. 1000 grit and then washed again.

I've painted quite a few resin and white metal parts and kits over the years and never used any special primers, just regular Tamiya aerosol ones. Like Klutz has said already, the key is the preparation of the parts. A thorough de-grease, wash in detergent and a light sanding all help the paint to stick better onto the surface.
