Dash light problem

Anyone ever have issues with the dash lights, specifically relating to the dimmer part of the light switch where you turn it to dim the lights? I have the light knob that is on the dash not the blinker stalk. When you turn it to dim the dash lights it feels "crunchy" as if the contacts are rusty i'm assuming. I hope its not something i'd have to replace because i'm willing to bet you can't find it anywhere easily(for cheap).I'm not sure if its anything i can access and clean the rust off if that indeed is the problem, but now my dash lights flicker like i'm at a rave party lol.--VERY annoying when driving at night!

the dimmer is a variable resistor. this has resistance wire windings, and as time passes these wires/wiper gets pitted..
to prolong life it is best no to dim the dash lights too much, or add another light to the circuit as this does cause a shorter life..
