Like the title says, 99 grand am se headlights won't work. My wife came out of class to go home and had no headlights. SOMETIMES the fogs work, and the highbeam indicator is on no matter what. Could this be a multifunction switch? I'm in Afghanistan so trying to troubleshoot this via phone calls and internet! Just trying to rule everythign out before i have her take it to a shop and pay $$$ for somehting simple. Thanks

It does sound like the multi-function switch, but I would check your fuses first, But odds are that it could be the multi-function switch is bad.

Thanks, I made sure she had the fuses checked first. I'll have her pick up a switch in the am and try that.
Is the multi-function switch the same as teh stop light switch? I looked up the part number on autozone and the cross reference was stop light switch?
Is this the proper part number? ACDELCO Part # 12450036

we are in similar situations I am also away from home but I took several pictures of the engine and If my wife has any problem I just open picture in Microsoft Paint, and circle or show with arrows what she hast to check and then email to her. One time she was worrying about some engine noise and I said to her just record a short clip of the engine while it is running and email it back to me. It turnd out to be nothing. Lol that is not now she even knows how to use professional grade scanner. I was giving her directions via messanger. She took her laptop inside of the car and was online with me and was reading scanner live data and codes so I can tell her what is wrong with the car. You have to be careful with them or they will put wrong oil into wrong reservoir.
oh I see that she check the fuses already, but ask her does she see red brake light on on the instrumetn panel? If yes then she probably did not release e-brake all theway. All you need is one notch on the e-brake and all lights will be out.
I will see what I can suggest for you but in the mean time did she check fuses. It is unlikely that both headlights go out at the same time that sound like a fuse or relay. I will look at the diagrams and will let you know.
what size engine you have?
I see that she already has checked the fuses, but ask her if the brake light is on on the instrument panel (the red one) if yes then she did not release e-brake completely and all you need is one notch and all the lights will be out.

Ya, I had her pickup a multi switch this morning. pretty sure with the high beam indicator on that it's the switch.

I found info.
disconnect multy switch connector c1
ignition switch must be in off position
measure voltage between connector c1 terminal "E" and ground is battery voltage measured?
if no check headlamp ckt breaker and ckt 640 for open
if yes replace switch

disregard my last post (that was for 97 ga)
here is for 99
Back probe the multy function switch with a test lamp between terminal 33 of the switch assembly connector C1 and ground.
Does the test lamp light?
If yes: replace switch
If no: fix open in ckt 1200
ckt 1200 is pink wire and goes to under hood junction block.
