Buying a new car

So I’m thinking of buying a new car. (in case my honda dies for good, i still don't know what to do with that.)
I’ve heard a lot of advice that I should buy a Toyota prius. It being environmentally friendly and cuts back on the gas. But doesn’t that mean I spend more on the car’s battery? And a few people have told me that hybrid cars are pretty expensive to maintain. I’m really looking for a car that can save me on gas. Are hybrids really the only way? Or can you guys recommend me to a cheaper alternative?
Any ideas or opinions will help me on my decision would be amazing!
I would truly appreciate it.
