2003 protede 2.0

Hey all, recently got the dreaded check engine light and the shuddering and all that comes with a carbon build up. i changed the egr valve cleaned what little carbon i could find and put it back together. now the check engine light is gone but the RPMs go up and down and she fights to stay running but always dies withing 20 seconds. any sugestion would be great, thanks.
