i have a 98 olds cutlass 3.1. I've been told that this model has a transaxle. the car is shifting hard and slipping on take-offs. i would usually check trans fluid but unable to on this. please help! P.S. about 80,000 miles on it.

Welcome to AF, why can't you check the fluid?

i,ve been told on a transaxle you have to take it to a shop to have it checked.

How to check transmission fluid on a 98 oldsmobile cutlass?
http://site1.wikianswers.com/templates/icons/abar_a.gif?v=56098 There is no dipstick on a '98 Oldsmobile Cutlass, so you must take it to a mechanic and have the transmission serviced after 100,000 miles (per the owner's manual). Poor design if you ask me.
This is what I have read and been told, newbie has nothing to do with it, I do know a thing or two about mechanicing, having done my own for years. I just thought someone might have knowledge on how you could do it yourself. Thanx anyway.

My apology you are correct, BTW the " newbie" was not directed to what seemed like a silly question. My car is a 3800, has a dipstick. Go to this thread for the info. http://www.automotiveforums.com/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=440777
