Oil Change Interval?

Advance Auto Parts has Castrol Edge synthetic oil on sale for $24.99 plus a PUREone oil filter. Couldn't pass the deal up and with the Castrol mail-in-rebate for $15.00 total cost will be $12.00.

This oil is rated for a 15,000 miles oci. I usually do 5k oci. I try to use the OLM but always end up disconnecting the battery for something before it comes on. Since winter is comming up and I was changing my sister oil I decided to go ahead and put the castrol edge in last fill only had 2800 miles on it.

I plan on taking this oil to at least 7500 miles even if the OLM comes on and winter time is comming up. Thats really the main reason I did it was so I wouldn't have to change it during the winter. Also I live in an apartment complex which isn't alway the best and most comfortable place to work on a car. I drive about 12k-15k a year so this would also cut down my oil change Intervals and save money if I can find It on sale again versus regular dino oil.

What is everyone eles oil change interval? Does anyone else do extended oil change intervals on their oil (past 5k) or what is your oci? And what are your thoughs on my plan or edge oil? Other than that I been using Penzoil dino since I had my car and Castrol GTX once with oil changes at 3k and eventually moved up to 5k.

I started using Mobil One in my van a couple years back. What I intended to do was leave the oil in for a year's time since I don't put that many miles on it. ( Was thinking @ 12,000 to 15,000 miles /yr.) What I also do is change the oil filter half way through this interval or roughly six months into the cycle and top off whatever oil is lost during the filter only change. I'm due for another change this month and have only put about 9000 miles since it was last changed. The oil still looks clean. By changing the filter and using a good quality filter , you can extend the interval with the synthetic over the conventional oil.I also use WIX oil filters as they have been rated better quality than the A C Delcos I used to regularly use. I also tend not to be tied to one brand of oil and usually comparison shop. I will have to check that deal out at my local Advanced Auto.

Did a little research on this oil and cane across the site where one can download the rebate C man spoke of. If you are interested, you can find it here (http://www.castrol.com/castrol/sectiongenericarticle.do?categoryId=9030528&contentId=7055589&nicam=Reprise&nisrc=Google&nigrp=Brand_Oil&niadv=&nipkw=Castrol%20EDGE%20Oil).

We put about 8K miles a year on our 97 PA. I use Mobile One and a Wix filter. I was changing the filter half way through but after asking here on the Forum the general thought was as long as I used a good oil filter it should go the 7500-8000 miles I put on it in a year. When I changed it in July it had 7800 miles and the OLM was down to 15%. It just rolled over 90K so we should have many more years of comfortable cruising.

In my experience, oil life has a lot to do with the type of driving you do and the engine condition.

Older, higher-mileage engines have more blow-by and lead to a faster rate of hydrocarbons contaminating the engine oil than newer engines. Ideally, hogh-mileage engines warrant more frequent oil changes than newer ones to achieve the same levels of protection.

For those interested I just purchased a 5qt. container of the Castrol Edge synthetic oil at Wal Mart for $19.50. Add the $15.00 rebate brings the final cost down to $4.50.

EDIT: For clarification purposes concerning the Castrol rebate. It is a $15 rebate on the purchase of 5 - 1qt. bottles, and a $10 rebate on 1- 5qt. bottle.

I've always done 5000km intervals on my regular everyday driven cars. Winter stored stuff get the 5000km as a guideline but most importantly I change it before winter storage.

My 00 Park Ave is my first car with the oil change interval in the DIC. I've had it for 3 or 4000 kms. The oil was changed as soon as I bought in and now it's at 65%.

Did the oil change with the castrol edge about 2 weeks ago. Did notice that more oil has seeped past the oil pan gasket than my usual YB Pennzoil. So I guess its true that synthetic oil leaks easier, though some might not consider it a true synthetic. But I didn't properly torque the bolts when I change the gasket so I will do that soon.

Have not put enough miles on it to see the burn rate but it seems that my oil burn rate/leak rate has went from 1200 miles/qt to I around 3k/qt being consertive going by the dipstick it seems more like 4k/qt with regular dino.

Plan on keeping this oil in at least 8k miles or till summer if all goes well. Or till I can't bare it anymore:p. The longest I went without an oil change is 5k miles. I like working on my car so I almost can't help changing the oil.

You can mix synthetic oil with dyno oil and I know a couple guys that do this.So far,no engine failures which have not happened yet .They pour one one quart of synthetic oil in with the dino oil.To do this, use the same brand oil.I use Carquest oil filters which are made by Wix and I know the oil filter number easily. For example,a Carquest oil filter part number for the 3.1s,3100s,3400s and 3800s is a B111.

Why Upgrade to Castrol Edge (http://www.castroledgeusa.com/#/browse/why-upgrade)

Looks like a good oil for the everyday driver, but I will stick with Amsoil Dominator Racing oil for my air pumps! :smokin:

Update: Have been using the Castrol EDGE for 3,300 miles so far with 1qt of Havoline deposit shield dino motor oil, I'm loosing 1qt per 2600mi. I have another stash of it that I plan on using next winter. I like the oil it starts up instantly in cold weather which for a while was colder than usually, below freezing or close to it for most of December. I do mainly short trip driving, work 12mi round trip, and everything is close to me for the most part, with an occasional long drive. Oil is the normal color I see in the summer.

OLM has yet to go off at 3,300 miles and it was calibrated with oils from 1995 era. Wish could see the %, it just has a 10% oil reminder light. This is interesting to me because I do mostly 5-6mile trips one way and it been pretty cold at least by my standards. I curious to see when the OLM will go of being that this is considered a servere service schedule even by my car's owner's manual. I still plan on taking it to 7500mi since it's rated for 15k and I'm adding fresh oil.

I use castrol synthec 10w30 in my 95 PA. I made the switch to synthetic about 2 years ago and so far so good. I used castrol gtx for the first 25,000km's after I bought it then changed to synthetic. I always use a castrol oil filter and change my oil every 5,000km's. I had read that you could delay your oil change with synthetic and go much longer so one interval I decided to try going 8,000km's b4 i changed it. After the 8k I looked at the oil It was a lil darker than the usual 5k oil change but it still seemed ok. I didn't feel good about having the oil in it that long so went back to every 5k after that.. I've been running synthetic in it for 50,000km's and it now has 177,000km's.. From december to march I put 5w30 and the rest of the year I run 10w30. My oil consumption is pretty much always the same about a quart per 5k except when i put the 5w30 in it. Then the oil consumption seems to be less for some reason more like 1/2 to 3/4 of a quart per 5,000km's not sure why..
