High Battery Voltage on Dash

My battery gauge has jumped to the top end and is staying there. I dont seem to have any other issues right now. All other electrical seems fine. Battery cranks the motor with no issues. Is there a tell-tale sign to check for a problem if this happens? Only issue on the vehicle is that if it gets below 1/4 tank gas, it tends to not want to start. Turns over but wont start so not getting fuel. Would this cause a volt spike?
Appreciate the suggestions in advance.

Need to check voltage at the batt with a digital volt meter. With engine off should be around 12.5v and with engine running should be around 14.5v. If so it's most likely the gauge.
Lots of other posts about the same 1/4 tank issue. Only suggestion is to keep it above 1/4 tank.

Questions on your fuel guage. When your vehicle doesn't start at 1/4 of a tank,do get the tank filled to full? How much fuel does it take to get from the 1/4 mark on the guage to full?I ask these question because my suburban seems to have an inaccurate guage. When my guage reads between 1/4 and 1/2 I get it fueled up.I also reset the trip odometer to know how far I have travelled.I have not done any real troubleshooting to correct the problem, but too much resistance in the wiring could be a cause or the guage is actually malfuntioning.I hope this info will be helpful.

when your below 1/4 tank reading "AS HE STATED" this is not very accurate fuel supply reading..also when this occurs it usually means the fuel pump has problems...need pressure test...
