Hello everyone. Well, I had made a thread asking you guys what would be the best cams for my firebird v6 3.8. You gave good ideas on what to go for, but I was thinking.... do I really want to spend that kinda cash? Then I said to myself why not get a hypertech max energy, that's the newest from hypertech (I think) it will run me 380 to get it and according to hypertech and extra 14 to 20 hp. So my question again to you guys is....... should I still go with the cams or get the hypertech and maybe have extra cash for some other add ons.

That tuner sounds like a waste if you plan on getting more bolt-ons later.

???????? In your opinion......... why do you say that?
Is it not the purpose of tuner to do that if you get othe bolt on?
I don't see what you are saying? Explain, maybe I'm not seeing what you are.

Here is why its a waste if you plan on adding bolt-ons later.
The tuner you are looking at is not a 'catch-all' tuner. Its only good to enhance the stock tune. Any engine mods (ie cold air intake, headers, exhaust, cams, nitrous...etc) cannot be tuned with this programmer. So, if you were to get the tuner, then add on some bolt-ons for your car, you could not use the programmer to tune for these new mods. So, it would be like you added the bolt-ons without the 'enhanced stock tune' in the first place. Hence, the tuner would be a waste. Hope this helps and makes sense.

Ok youtube horsepower tv 03/04 mustang cobra and tell me that the tuning they did with "pulley set" bolt ons is just a big farse or what. Because clearly they still tuned the car before and after, and you are saying the you can not tune it with bolt ons. But don't get me wrong I do appreciate your input, that's why I'm asking.

Ok, you need to go back and watch your own suggested video again. I watched it all the way thru, maybe you didn't. For one thing, they used a different handheld tuner than the one you mentioned at the start of this thread. They used the hypertech power programmer III, which offers different features.

Secondly, this specific programmer (for the 03 cobra) explicitly offers that tuning feature for smaller blower pulleys. (here's the link: http://www.hypertech-inc.com/media/dynocharts/aa/42000_84001_2003-2004_ford_svt_cobra_-_46l_sc.pdf) (Look under tuning features)

Now, I looked up the Power Programmer III for your V6 (assuming a 2002 model) and found that it has these specific tuning features. (Here's the link: http://www.hypertech-inc.com/media/dynocharts/aa/32002_2000-2002_camaro_firebird_-_38l_1.pdf).

See the difference? Tuning for a smaller blower pulley (ie. cobra) and under drive pulleys are two different things.

And the reason I said that maybe you didn't watch the video all the way thru was because, at the end, around 7:45, they mention why the didn't add other bolt-ons and the harm it could cause. That programmer doesn't tune for extra bolt-ons, just the pulleys that its programmed for. So watch it again, here's the link to the video I watched: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oXeF4kZZ6jg

And that leads me to my last point, why either tuners, the power programmer III or the hypertech max energy would be a waste. They would be a waste for the exact reasons that they mentioned in the video, (specifically at 8:13 when Mike is talking).

Now, on to the specific programmer you mentioned at the start of this thread. I went ahead and looked up the max energy for you as well, (again, assuming a 2002 model) and it offeres pretty much the same tuning features as the programmer III. (Here's the link: http://www.hypertech-inc.com/media/dynocharts/aa/32002_2000-2002_camaro_firebird_-_38l_1.pdf)

So, I hope this clarifies everything for you. Yes, these prgrammers are good at OPTIMIZING stock tunes and features they are made for, but for other than that, they are a WASTE.
