Cruise Control / Electrical Smell

I've got a 94 geo prizm sedan with what appears to be an aftermarket cruise control. The CC wasn't working but the problem was that the control cable had snapped. It was simple to reattach it, but after the first time trying it (it worked...thank god because I have an hour commute every morning/evening) there was a strong electrical smell.

Any ideas? It hadn't been used in I don't know how long, so I'm hoping it is just the system getting rid of some gunk or something.
