What am I supposed to line up here? What position are all the marks supposed to be in ?

Next question has any one ever heard of these engines jumping time? Or is one side more prone to jumping?

They will jump time, but usually just one tooth. Usually the problem stems from a timing guide failing. I will put a picture here too.

Alright good deal. In that picture, I set that engine to what I believed to be TDC. Looks like I'm on track. Thanks for the drawing you posted.

No problem. Just wondering where Peasticks is.

It's in the sticks of course, by Owingsville.
I have a fairly good idea of how to check the timing with out un necessarily tearing the whole front of the engine down. I need to pull the valve cover and rotate the engine up to see the timing marks and check to see that the brass links on the chain line up to the marks.

OK I know where that is. You are right on checking timing. You do not necessarily need to line up the copper links. Those are there for installation puropses. If you want to try to line them up, go for it. Look closelu at the chain guides and the tensioners. If thwe chain is really worn. the ternioners won't be able to adjust the guides out to hold it in place. Then you sould skip a tooth.

The 8th cylinder is the last cylinder to fire on a 4.6L.
Remove all 8 plugs, and put a paper wad in the spark plug hole on cylinder 8, turn the motor over until the paper wad pop's!

This will put cylinder 8 @ TDC for guidance.
Turn the crank by hand to TDC on cylinder 1, and check all your timing marks.
I like using brake cleaner, so I can see the timing marks better.

Yep!

The primary cam tensioner can go bad , and derail the chain.

This canbe real fun with a DOHC, and leaving the cam chain cover on.
