Sensor middle top of windshield?

On my 98, at the middle and very top of the windshield I see a small grey metal looking type of magnet or sensor from the outside (about less than 1 centimeter in length). From the inside of the car you can't see it because it is hidden under the roofing, but also from inside there is a thick black thick single cable/wire sticking out. When I pull it, out of the thick black cable comes out a thin red/pink wire, which I think might be attached to this sensor (I'm not sure). The other part of this black thick wire runs under the roof headliner back towards the passenger side. Can anyone tell me what this wire is for or what this sensor is?

Although I don't have an answer, I'm curious about what it can be. I don't think is OEM, though... An aftermarket antenna, maybe? The only thing in that area, as far as I know, may be the harness for the overhead console, but your description doesn't match it.

DO you have the overhead console with a compass?

No, only the short standard one. Is the wire there the be attached to a compass version of the overhead console?
