Eight different class winners at roebling v8sc

The big story at the SARRC Invitational Challenge was that there were eight different winners in the V8 Series classes for the weekend, with no one dominating. With valuable points up for grab and two races for the weekend to earn them, the competition was hot and heavy in all four classes.
In V8 GT-1, Wild Bill Smith put his wicked, winged super late model on the overall pole in front of points leader Dave Machavern and his Tommy Riggins Corvette. In a bit of a surprise, Bob Mayer put his ex World Challenge Corvette in the third spot overall and first in the V8 GT-2 class clocking a 1:13.998 on a very slick track. In V8 SPO, former Nascar Goody's Dash Champ Larry Hoopaugh in his Nascar Cup car edged out Lee Arnold for the class pole, with Danny Foster third in his Outback Dodge Charger. In V8 GTA, Tony Amico was showing his usual speed and laid down a 1:15.845 to take the top spot over Kentuckian Randy Walker with newcomer Jim Matheson third.
At the green for Saturday's race Smith used all the muscle in his big SB2 Cup motor to lead into one, Machavern tucked in behind and the two ran pretty much nose to tail for five laps when Smith left the door open going into turn one and Machavern stuck it in there to take a lead he would not relinquish.
Smith never went far but just couldn't quite get the run he needed to get back by. In V8 SPO, Hoopaugh had been leading since the start, but was battling with V8 GT2 leader Bob Mayer in a classic horsepower versus handling duel. Hoopaugh was using the 800 plus horsepower in his stocker to great advantage, pulling several car lengths on Mayer everytime he got back on the gas. Mayer would reel him back in as soon as they went under braking and would be all over Hoopaugh through the rollercoaster backside. While these two were having at it, Lee Arnold was charging up from his mid pack starting spot trying to get into position to challenge Hoopaugh for the class win. With Arnold closing on his bumper and competing in a different class, Mayer moved over and let Arnold get by to challenge Hoopaugh. The trio ran nose to tail the rest of the race with Hoopaugh just holding off Arnold for the win. Mayer easily won V8 GT2 over Ed Lewis and Steve Epley in their Z06 Corvette's.
Randy Walker ran a strong race in V8 GTA taking the win over Tommy "Hollwood" Graham and points leader Tony Amico.
Sunday's SARRC Invitational Race was the feature, a twenty lap affair to settle the SCCA South East Division championship as well as another points race for the V8 series. Smith was again starting from the pole and this time he would never give up the top spot. Smith worked lapped traffic brilliantly and Machavern could never get quite close enough to take a shot. Ray Webb ran a strong race in his V8 GT-1 Olds taking the third spot in the class and fifth overall. In V8 GT2 Mayer again was having it all his way in his Sam Power prepared, Katech powered C6R, playing with the fast stock cars and running away with the class until disaster struck on lap 15 when the torque tube gave up. Steve Epley had been running strong as well and inherited the lead and held off Ed Lewis for the win. Lee Arnold utilized the superior braking of his super late model type V8 SPO to chase down and get by Hoopaugh for the class win. In V8 GTA, Tony Amico, the 2008 class champion rebounded from Saturday's race where a late excursion through the grass killed his chance for a win. Amico ran strong and consistent, never letting "Hollywood" Graham or George Lutich get close enough to challenge.
It was a great weekend of competitive racing, and sets the stage for a grand finale at the American Road Race of Champions at Road Atlanta next month. All four classes will be decided at the ARRC with only Dave Machavern in V8 GT-1 with a nearly insurmountable lead.
The V8 series thanks the Buccaneer Region SCCA for another outstanding job hosting the SARRC Championship.
