Ok here is what i have a 1998 gtp with 88k km on it. First the traction control button doesnt work and i cannot get it to break the tires loose. it seems boggy when i first step on it then at like 30 it picks up and revs more. second the boost only goes almost to half way one bar short is this normal? shouldnt it go to full if i step on it hard? ok and the third the 0 to 60 time is almost well a little more then 10 seconds now i know this should be faster for a stock gtp any help please?????

Don't know when the last tuneup was? I think I would tune it up. Also, have you checked your air filter?

10 second 0-60, old ladies in Aveo's would be beating you!!! You may have a bad boost control valve, clogged catalytic converter, or fuel pressure issue. It could also be tune-up time. Do you get the "check/service engine soon" light on when you turn the key to on but with the engine off? If not, the bulb may be removed or burned out. I'd take it to Advance/Auto Zone and have it scanned to be sure you have no codes stored.

Thats a good one Rich. I thought he said he lives in Mexico. I guess he could bring it to the US/Mexican border to an Autozone.

BTW - Pemex gas sux!

actually im near mexico city but there is a autozone right near me lol. so ill get some of that done there is no cat converter on it and the light does come on when i turn the key but not when the motor is on. but the half boost thing is that normal till i change pulley?

I know PEMEX is all i have to work with !! lol but its cheap lol but yah i know it sucks i said its dirty. since its the only gas station in mexico i have no choice but autozones are a dime a dozen all over the city its no different then the states wal marts , malls, clubs bars no different cept for the difference in class of living rich and poor.

hello all, i have an 85' tercel wagon (4x4) with the 3 spd auto and it pops itself out of gear when i turn right. Other than that i just did the rad and timing belt myself and she doesn't even burn any oil. Thanks!

Wondering the same thing. No one cares about his retarded tercel that won't stay in gear.

I would say to change the fuel filter first off. (check the tips and maintenance subforum). Then maybe rent a guage and check fuel pressure.

And no, my 2000 GTP even with the stock pulley size would reach to the max boost on the guage.

the fuel filter is under the drivers side right? or is it in the gas tank?

Pemex has a high sulfur content and obviously Mexico has no clean air/emissions standards. Cuidad Juarez right across the border from El Paso has several Autozones but the parts are expensive compared to the U.S. and the stores are not well stocked with the parts you need. Most come across the border to the U.S. as a result and most do not have auto insurance either. :shakehead

Moot issue anyways. Unless the SES/CEL light is on there will be nothing to scan for. Autozones in the U.S. normally do not run an odb-ii scan unless the SES/CEL light is on. But I guess anything goes in Mexico. You can purchase your own odb-ii scanner to check for DTCs which Autozone sells at least in the U.S.

As suggested check to make sure the boost bypass valve is fully closing at WOT or high acceleration. If that is good then there is probably an internal issue with the Eaton M90 Gen3 supercharger.

That post has been moved to the Toyota Tercel forum.

My 98' always achieves 100% boost when I stomp on it.

0-60 in 10sec? They must be mixing snails & turtles in that Pemex!:rofl: Have you previously had any CEL's and took the car to a mechanic in Mexico? The shops down there are notorious for disabling the CEL light and not fixing the problem! Anyway, sounds like a clogged cat and some other problems to to me! :crying:

well i looked there is not cat... i bought plugs wires and fuel filter today but i had the autozone guy plug it in to the computer and it gave us the code for no O2 sensor so maybe thats it? i really dont know how that effects the car

Davemex1986

is there two 02 sensors on this car? i can see one behind where the shifter would be under the car there is a weird shaped bend and i would asume there is another before that yah? where the converter would be that i dont have for some reason...:shakehead

BNaylor

Yes there are two. One pre CAT and one post CAT. Since you do not have a converter installed which is not uncommon in Mexico the rear 02 sensor is irrelevant since it monitors converter efficiency only and any DTC like P0420 it may give off. The front 02 sensor is the one that helps control air/fuel mixture ratio in closed loop mode operation and keeps emissions in check. When you go WOT or pedal to the metal the front 02 sensor is not used since the PCM switches to open loop mode operation so it probably is not your problem.

Post the DTC that was retrieved.

i had this same problem last year! i think it was a bad fuel pump causing all sorts of problems but i dont remember..ill try to find the post about it, or the bill..ill let ya know

ok i remembered. there is a plug in front of the boost valve under a wireharness. i dont know what it is or what it does but mine was unplugged for some reason and when i plugged it back in the car started running perfect again.

also if thats not it maybe check for vacuum leaks as im pretty sure they can cause similar problems

yah i looked there is like 1 line not even hooked up! and the others are cracked iwth tape on them.... damn mexican auto shops ill take a few pics and show you guys what i have i rev the motter and the throttle thing on the supercharger is slower to kick in and dosent move all the way when i rev the motor and i mean come on its 0 to 60 is over 10 seconds! that blows i cant even burnout in the rain!

well for starters u definataly have a fuel/spark issue. replace filters and plugs/wires and only premium gas. as far as your boost guage u might have a throttle stop out of adjustment. your boost guage should max even at a stand still. good luck :banghead::banghead::banghead::banghead:.:banghead :

The Rev limiter limits the RPM's so the boost cant max at just revving. In fact, I have never seen my boost register at all when I revved (although I don't sit there and rev my motor). Also, the 3800's to my knowledge do not have a throttle stop adjustment.

I think he found his problem, a vacuum leak due to shoddy repairs with electrical tape.
