NR4 Transfer Case fluid capacity

2004 Chevy Suburban K-1500, NR4 - Borg Warner 4482

I took the fill plug out and about 1 qt of Dex III drained out and took out the drain plug and drained the rest. From what I understand, 2 quarts of fluid will fill tranfer case to the bottom of fill hole. I can only put in about 1.5 to 1.75 quarts back in. How can I put in the rest to bring the total to 2 quarts and how is it possible to fill 1 quart more than capacity?

First the wrong fluid has been put in,use only Auto Trac II fluid only in 1999 and up GM 4x4 transfer cases.Get 3 quarts of Auto Trac II fluid from the dealer instead,takes about 2 1/2 quarts

As said, use Auto Trac II blue fluid for your T-case. As for capacities, they are only general guidelines, so fill to the bottom of the fill plug hole.

As for the excess fluid in the t-case. It could be leaking from the tranny into the t-case? Or it could have been over filled previously?? Pretty hard to overfill a qt into a t-case.

I never had this occur to me or seen this ...I have however read that the transmission fluid can by a failure of a seal cause this to occur..

see if the transmission fluid is low ...the 1.75 qts to fill the transfercase is normal...

make sure you are using the correct fluid also ...in the transfercase...GM now uses trac II fluid dexron III is history...trac II is blue color..

My transfer case takes Dex III or the equivalent but NOT Dex VI. It does not take the fluid that you reference. If you disagree, look it up. I have a NR4 which is a Borg Warner 44-82 which is full time full wheel drive.

After further investigation, it indeed takes 1.5 quarts and some people take the speed sensor out and add an extra quart because the transfer cases were getting very hot and causing the ATF to flash off causing TC failures for those that do not check their fluid. I guess that trac II fluid would be ok but I think full synthetic Mobil 1 ATF is ok too or I can use GM's Manual Transmission & Transfer Case Fluid part # 88861800.

That info is wrong on use of the fluid and the Auto Trac II fluid is a lot better than the ATF which has been proven

you should be using the dexron III or the replacement fluid for your transfercase which is as you stated the 88861800 GM spec #...

mobil one transmission fluid is not to be used...check this out at the dealership..also in you owners manual it should list the GM spec # then cross this any products you buy itshould have on this replacement fluid bottle the same spec # listed..

I think I mentioned this before...any tires of different wear used on an all wheel full time drive vehicle will cause the drive train to rapidly wear out ....and as you would suspect over heat the drive train componets/damage the fluid....
