My '88 Escort Pony just crossed over the 500,000 mile mark this morning, so I gave it a special treat today, an oil and filter change with a quart of Slick 50. I guess my new goal is 600,000 miles. If it makes it there should be an update in about 5 years give or take a year.

It's a 1.9L TBI with 4 speed manual transmission.

Sounds like they really should've been putting a sixth digit (not including tenths) in the lot of these vehicles. But given that they're capable (though not likely) of rusting out in 200k, I suppose they're afraid of the legal implications. Are they doing this for Focus and later ??

You're going to have to keep referring back to these threads in order to remember how many times it's turned-over. ;)

I don't know what year they started it but the later model Escorts had the 6th mileage digit. My '97 wagon has the 6th digit, but it doesn't register the tenths of a mile except on the trip odometer.

Do not pour in the slick 50!I have heard of cases of engine seizures due to slick 50 being poured in.

It may not help, but it sure hasn't hurt anything. I've been using it every 50K miles in all my cars for about 16 years and my dad has used it in his for about the same length of time without any problems. Until the '88 Escort Pony the most mileage I'd ever gotten from a car was about 230K and that was without Slick 50 treatments and I've always kept a tight routine on oil and filter changes in all my cars.

That FTC article is dated July of 1996.

My Father uses it with his oil changes in his '92 Olds Silhouette. But it has the GM 3800 series engine which are known to be rock-solid anyway.

He has "always" used Castrol motor oil. Many years ago I had compared to other brands and could tell a huge difference just by running it through my fingers. 10w30 Valvoline, Pennzoil, RoyalPurple, etc, seemed thin and runny while the Castrol seemed fluid and clingy. In recent years it seems Castrol is becoming more like the others; though still better.

Had once tried Castrol's synthetic blend and got rid of it after about a week. It seemed thing & runny like the other brands. Did have a bit more power probably just by it's lighter viscousness but the engine was noticeably louder as well; which I didn't like.

For me, from cold-start to shut-off I let my ears tell the story and simply stick with what is quietest.

My father replaced two engines in a couple cars,the customer poured in slick 50 and the engines seized right up right away.My father ended up pulling the pan on both of them,full of sludge in the pan to get them to turn over.

Sure! and Pennzoil contains wax. Can anyone here imagine how many million bottles of Slick-50 have been sold, let alone the knockoffs.

BTW, I do not use Slick-50.

My guess is they poored Slick 50 in a belated attempt to save a severely neglected engine. Sludge doesn't just occur overnight.

I pulled the oil pan off the '88 Pony to replace the oil pan gasket when it had somewhere between 300-400k miles and while the oil pan wasn't completely clean it only had a small amount of sludge build in a couple places on the sides of the oil pan and the bottom side of the engine was really clean. I suspect that most of the sludge that was in the oil pan probably had accumulated from dust getting into the engine where the car had been driven to work on construction sites since it was new.

These 2 engines ran fine before slick 50 was poured in and were not neglected.I read about a 1979 Pontiac 400 seized after slick 50 was poured in.

I think something contibuted to the engine seizing other than the Slick 50. I've always said I didn't know whether it helped or not, but why would it cause some engines to seize and not others. This is also the first car I ever used it in and have got over 500K miles from this car and prior to this one the most miles I ever had on a car was about 230K and it was using about 4 times the amount of oil this one is with 500K miles. My dad and I have been using it in all our cars every 50K miles for the last 16 years without any problems. This is the first time I've ever heard anything about it causing any problems.
