Without a photo it's hard to tell, but quite possibly you'll need a headlight restoration kit with sandpaper, polish and a polisher.

Try polishing with a plastic polish first and see if you make some progress.

If the lens hardcoat is so badly oxidized that it needs to be removed, you'll need to do some wetsanding in 4 steps from say 800- to 2000-grit, then polish. It will take some patience.

Mothers has a new kit in their PowerBall line called PowerBall 4Lights and I've used this on several cars with great success. There are several kits on the market, but expect to pay about $20-25 for a good one that includes everything you need to restore it and maintain it -- most of the kits will do several cars, so it's a good investment.

If it's just cloudy and not severely damaged, I would avoid using any abrasive product, it will only degrade the lens surface further.
Oxidation clouding is easily removed with a liquid non abrasive acrylic lens deoxidizer.

Headlights are reconditioned by taping off the painted areas around the headlight and applying a compound. Next the mechanic uses increasing grits of sandpaper to reveal a clearer lens underneath. Last, they apply a clear acrylic coating that has to dry for several hours indoors.


There are kits available that let you polish the lens at home, but without the last critical step (applying the new acrylic coating) the headlight is left unsealed and will deteriorate even more quickly.

Don't make the mistake of using sandpaper on your headlights unless they are already "shot".
If you do you will regret it. Most of the time its just oxidation thats yellowed on your headlights and it don't take something as agressive or damaging as sandpaper to take that off.
That's what liquid acrylic lens deoxidizers are for.
