In December, I'll be heading to Hawaii for a holiday.
Whats the deal with mobile phones (cell phones) in the states?
I was told it is a little different in the States.
Over here we have SIM cards which are inserted into unlocked phones. The SIM gives us the number and access to the network.
we can have a contract or we can go Prepaid.
For example, when I went to Bali, I took a mobile and I bought a local carrier SIM. If I used my Australian SIM, I pay for the diversion and network rental from the local carrier as well as the costs from home. It cost the mrs $700AUS for a few phone calls where my local Sim cost me around $40AUS to call home.
When we go to Hawaii, I was wondering if I should do the same and buy a local pre paid SIM to call home.

I don't know exactly.
I'd just buy a throwaway phone with prepaid minutes.
My phone I use for work cost me $15 to buy and refill cards come in different values starting at $15. It charges $1/day for usage, and .10/min for local calls to landlines, regardless of area code. But I never tried an international call...I don't know what that would cost on it.
But at least you know it won't cost any more than what you already paid for...

I can see why you got a divorce :(
Do you really need a cell? Vacations are for getting away from it all.
IMO speak to your local cell carrier. They may have deals or affiliations in Hawaii.

Most cell phones use sim cards here too, so you may be ok. I'd contact my cell company if i were you to see what extra charges you may incur if your phone would even work in Hawaii. Otherwise, buy a Walmart Go-Phone when you get there.

Ahhhh, i never traveled with the ex. The new girl is a travel agent and thought she had global roaming as part of her package but she didn't. Vodafone did re-calculate the bill and it was halved.
I like to have a phone so I can just call cabs or info lines when I need to and as a back up. I like the idea of a pre-paid SIM since the number is only valid while on holidays and I won't be getting calls. and like Jeff said, "at least you know it won't cost any more than what you already paid for..."
Oh and the best thing about the holiday, is I get to drive a Lotus Elise for a day around the island. That baby is mine from midnight to midnight. It better have a fresh set of tyres! :evillol:

Sorry, but it will be equipped with tires, instead.
And on another note, I am so jealous that you will have an Elise for 24 hours. BTW, how does the lil lady feel about being replaced with another lady for a day? :uhoh:

And next year Kelly has organised a trip to LA, Las Vegas and San Fran!
Apparently we fly to LA, do tourist shit, then I get to drive a Mustang down to Las Vegas, do the casino shit, get married by Elvis before flying up to San Fran.
So all I need now is a full cavity search from your buddies in Customs at LAX for the trip to be complete :evillol:

I think I could arrange that for you if you're into that kinda stuff. If you come to the mainland, you could be in trouble. I have no connections in Hawaii, so you should be safe there.
