spring rates

ive asked this before and i got an unsatisfactory answer...
does anybody know the spring rates for the caprice?
typical v8 4dr ac caprice
either that or replacement spring moog part numbers?
just curious because i am looking to stiffen up the ride a lot and need a starting point.

my plan is to increase the rate at least 70% and keep the car mostly at the same height.
if i had the funds, i might consider lowering spindles of some kind (i believe they exist for our cars) but alas, money is tight

check out MOOG 5044 or MOOG 5030...keeping at the same height???when as now ? or when this vehicle was built...

normal sag with the stock weak caprice springs they sag after 20,000mi...unless it has the heavy duty tow pkg springs..special order on vehicle purchase...

usually most do not like how high the new HD springs set up the front end...they therefore cut down the HD springs to the desired height...when the springs are cut they get stiffer...you will find on a typical caprice the use of HD oem spec springs will raise the front end two inches because the stock standard springs are so shot..

yeah, i know the feeling...
when i installed new shocks, the car raised up somehow... not sure why but i can only think it was because of the gas charged shocks versus the old non gas shocks...
thanks

I would like to know this too, so I can use it as a frame of reference. What would the spring rate be with base springs?

5044 is 334 lb/in
5030 is 419 lb/in
assuming these are the right springs that is.
also i would think those were front springs

napa lists pn NCP277205
i found a moog spring chart and that spring has the same specs as moog spring pn 5428 which lists a spring rate of 393 lb/in

i would say that baseline is around 350 on average.

I changed the springs in one standard 83 caprice and one F41 85 (2 door) caprice to 8 passenger station wagon springs price for a set was about $80. The handling was very greatly improved, but then you MUST use station wagon shocks on the REAR.Because the SW springs are not as tall as the sedan springs. You cant drink coffee and drive with this suspension but the car now will do what you tell it to do.245/45/17s help with urathane bushings and larger front sway bar and adding a rear sway bar. It make the car much more FUN!. Driving IS the most dangerous thing we do.

Get the springs out of an 8 passenger station wagon,I've installed a full set twice in a 83 and 91 caprice classic replacing the standard suspension. It becomes a totally different car, one that handles great, makes for a much safer car too.But them you must use the wagon shocks in the real.Thats very important.
