Tip for creating realistic upholstery texture

Hi guys

I just thought I'd share this simple tip I've discovered for achieving a realistic texture for car upholstery - at the moment I'm building Mansell's Ferrari 640 and wanted to simulate the course furry texture on the seat.

1) take a can of automotive primer
2) 'dust' the surface of the seat at arms length - the paint will dry before it hits the surface, creating a grainy texture (normally you DON'T want this on a car body!!)
3) And this is the result -

This tip works on steering wheels too :)

Good tip!

Testors uses the same idea with their Vinyl Top Texture Coat. The spray turns into snowflakes about a foot from the nozzle. It's available in black and white, and it produces an even rougher surface than your method.

IMO, the Testors texture (say that five times, as fast as you can) is too coarse for 1/24 scale upholstery - but it's perfect for carpeting.
