Just bought this car knowing it didn't run, and trying to figure this thing out. I mean this thing cranks real real hard and will not start. In fact when you let off the ignition its like the motor rocks back real hard, I think because of compression. I've already figured I'd have to remove the timing chain cover and verify timing, but wondered if these motors are notorious for timing problems. I've heard some of mention that they were since I bought it. Do these symptoms sound like a timing issue, and how likely is it that my valves are bent if the timing did jump?

If it jumped time its likly it dinged the valves. Do a compression test to check and see if they are closing.

Is it getting spark and fuel ?

Yesterday I had been thinking that it might have been hydro-locking so I pulled the plugs and everything is dry. From what I could see, there didnt appear to be any damage to the pistons or any evidence they have been in contact with anything (valves), however a pretty limited view.

Today i pulled the timing chain cover, lined up my crank sprocket, and my intake cam sprocket lines up. However my exhaust sprocket lines up at about 5 o'clock. I posted a picture below, clearly the exhaust sprocket jumped a tooth. Had to order parts so now I wait...

Update - Replaced timing chain, gears, guides, and tensioner and motor fired right up.
