I've got a 1996 Cherokee Sport and appears to have a knock in the bottom end. This also seems to be a common problem with higher mileage engines. Does anyone know if I can roll in a set of lower end bearings without pulling the engine ? Any other info would be great. This is a really nice Jeep and the first one I've owned. Now that I've got it it would be nice to get started. Other than the knock the rest of it is in A1 condition. One owner and all the records.

If you pull the oil pan it can be done. A machine shop can get you slightly over sized bearings, Mic the crank size before doing this. Talk to your local machine shop good people to talk to if you have a problem.

The 4.0 does have problems with piston slap too.You may have a bad piston too.I have seen one with the piston gone, pieces of the piston were in the pan and it sounded like a rod which all of the cylinders had to be bored out.Grooved up #6 cylinder and a couple more cylinders were bad.It is cheaper to fix these engines than buying an used engine. An used 4.0 goes for at least $1,200.00 and it is less than a grand to fix it.A reman is another option, more money and you get a better warranty.A reman from the auto parts stores is to stay away from, use cheap parts and the warranty sucks.
