I don't think that it is too early, I've read on the org where one guy changes his plugs religiously every 30k. Don't wait til 60k, I did that and my plugs were totally fried. It's just like that so called 100, 000 plug that you don't change until then, I don't buy it, I recommend changing before 60k especially if you are tough on your car or drive more frequently than usual.

Put a new fuel filter in there too and change your PCV valve.
I just did a 60K service, the fuel filter was really full of crap.

both the filter and the pcv valve help with fuel efficiency, right?
my 96 is at 70k and change. I bought it at 58, and since then havent changed the filter or the valve, and since purchasing, my efficiency went from 100 miles per quarter take to 100 miles per third of a tank..
would swapping those out help a bit, you think?

Cant possibly get it hmm?
I fill up at a quarter tank, reguardless...
when driving across the country, I averaged 380 per three quarters tank. filling up twice per day, driving about 750 per day, making the 2800ish mile trip i four days.. do the math.
in the city, I would average 300 per three quarters - desert conditions.
due to the new jersey weather, I think, I now average about 200 per three quarters, as high as 270, just last tank...
all figures are stock - no mods.
I'll check the air filter, I dont think i have recently..

Any thoughts on spark plug brand? Im leaning slightly towards splitfire. And Im taking up the advice on PCV and fuel filter replacement. Any other little things that I can do (did the K+N filter) to boost perf? (gotta stay stock specs tho) thanks in advance.

the torque convertor on the auto tranny causes a lot of gas consumption.

I just changed my plugs...used NGK platinum, same ones the car was built with. I had 64,000 miles on these original plugs and they looked used, not fried, but I felt pretty good in going ahead and changing them for new ones. I'm relatively easy on the engine, so I would have expected those original NGK's to last another 10,000 miles or so without any power loss.

For those who have not done their homework, take some advice from other consumers and experts.
Bosch, Champion, Splitfire: These are brands of sparkies that you put in cars that you are not worried about performance. These produce an average spark and last an acceptable amount of time...
However, the Maxima is a high-performance vehicle. In my course of dealings, I have asked around about what kind of spark plugs to replace in the Maxima, and all that I have heard is a resounding "NGK." I have also heard "I wouldn't touch Bosch with a ten-foot pole," and other comments. Why? Cheap price=Cheap quality (in most cases) and you want a good spark in your car. Bad sparks may lead to early combustion, pinging, and ultimately causing expensive damage to the engine. NGK has a reputation for solid performance, platinums over copper. Supposedly, they offer comparable results, platinums lasting almost twice as long.
Use what you will, but remember that it may only take once to really mess something up.

Just wanted to say I have done a little experiment. I have run my car with the original plugs since it was new, and it now has 117,000 miles on it. I apparently have lost a couple tenths at the strip, but i still can regularly get 400+ miles out of a tank. Thats shifting below 3500 and not cruising above 70. Just thought you woudl find that interesting, Oh and yes, im going to change them this weekend  Oh and yes, i will be sticking with proven performance and longevity... NGK baby. Others may work just as well, maybe better, but they are proven in this vehicle.
