Hello, I have a 1995 3.1L V6 Lumina. I was putting the car into reverse, and it like popped into it. The the speedometer quit working, and the transmission wouldnt shift out of first. So I looked it up, and everything pointed to the speed sensor. So I changed it, and it's still doing the same thing. What else could it be? I really miss my car! Thank You.

Welcome to AF, make sure you have vacuum to the modulator to start with.

Thanks for the welcome. How would I go about doing that?

L/s of trans down low there is a small cannister with a vacuum hose to it, engine running, make sure there is vacuum on the hose when disconnected from the modulator. BTW, is the speedo now working, if not that must be traced and repaired first.

vacuum really has nothing to do with shifting other than "shift feel",,,reverse still good???? tranny known for damaging reverse reaction shell "stove pipe",,which usually goes out with a clunk,,,or bang,,,then up-shift issues occur,,,piece is needed for 2nd clutch input,,,,,,though would not account for vss problems

no real advice,,,,a scanner would be nice,,,,not a code reader,,,to see live data in real time to see what the processor is getting from vss....another dumb thing is to check fuses gbaum

The VSS sends electrical pulse signals to both the speedometer and the ECM, through the instrument cluster. If replacing the VSS doesn't solve the problem, then there may be a faulty electrical connection on the instrument cluster.
