starter clicks nothing happens

i have a 1992 dodge dakota 3.9L i started it last week then it shut its self down after about 30 seconds tried it a few days same thing happened now the starter just clicks and it wont roll over...does anyone have an idea of what is wrong or how to fix it? thanks

Check the battery voltage. If it' below 12V, the battery is too low or may have a bad cell. This just happened to me last week, actually. Battery was reading 8V and had to have someone jump the car to get back home. Got a new battery the next day and all was better.
If you can get it going, take it to AutoZone or another local parts store and they will do free battery/alternator testing. If the alternator is not charging the battery when engine is running, replace the alternator.

we tried jumping it but still didnt get anywhere at all...

thanks for your help starter was the problem also needed new battery..now its burning oil..thats how it alwayss is fix one thing then you find something else

The wiring harness, that goes into the fuse box on the drivers side of the engine, is also a problem. There are two red wires that splice into one wire. The wires corrode at the splice. Make sure they are intact. I had the same problem. When i fixed "the" problem it worked for awhile, then it would die while running. It is the auto shut down/starter wires.
