replacing in-tank fuel pump with the inline one

Is this possible? and if yes did anyone do it, and did it work?
I would like to bypass or eliminate if I have to my in-tank fuel pump and just have one easily accessible inline that I can change in 5 minutes in the case I ever get stranded somewhere in the middle of the desert. Any good ideas?

I always wished GM would have put an access hole in the trunk floor area for access to the fuel pump and sending unit like Jap cars use to have. Maybe you could cut out an access hole. You'd have drop the tank first of course.

that is not a bad idea, GM original in-tank pumps come with plastic lines which are not very flexible and in this case would give us hard time when trying to pull the pump out of the small access opening. Maybe replacing plastic lines with rubber fuel lines and just using hose clamps at pump's inlet and outlet metal lines.

Of coarse you can.
They do sell kits just for this, but not realy worth it IMO.
A new OEM pump & screen should last at least 100-150K miles.
Not sure what the electric pumps run these days. Plus if you dont have a kit you need to make a way to control flow rates if it doesnt have a set screw on the side or a ECU to control it.
I have a Holley under hood mount pump, it'll pump 128 GPM! That's a little to much fuel. Though it does have a set screw on the side.
Yeah some Grand Prixs hav that access panel in the back seat area. Kinda nice, just makes a mess if fuel spills/leaks out in the back seat floor board. :(

You cant cut an access panel out of your back seat. Well you can but it would be pointless because the fuel lines wont clear enough to be removed from there and the line dont disconnect from the pump. Dont try to pry them off because bad stuff will happen when you put it back together. There are lots of inline pumps that people use on GAs. IMO a stock fuel pump will last longer then an inline. Yeah there easier to change but more expensive.
