97 Blazer fuel injector assembly

We just got my husband's Blazer (4WD) diagnosed by a mechanic. It was having fuel delivery problems (had to use starter fluid to get it started, and the engine would bog and sputter when you punched the gas while in park, you couldn't even put it in drive and give it any gas cuz the engine would die).

The mechanic said the fuel injector assembly is showing resistance, and the fuel filter is also dirty. He said parts would be $485 and labor is $275. Does that seem reasonable (we're in SoCal)? Has anyone else had to have this replaced (is that normal)? Any input/advice is appreciated. Just want to make sure this is the problem before we shell out $800.

You do not have a fuel injection assembly on a 97.
Each injector is seperate.
I can not picture how he thinks it is showing resistance.
Is your mechanic a tranied or certified tech?

Confirm good fuel pressure first.
Hard start cole is usually low fuel pressure.

The only true test on a fuel pump is to check the direct fuel pressure from fuel pump.
A quick test is to block off the return line and see if fuel pressure comes up to 75-85 lbs.
But do not run the pump at full pressure very long.
Also when testing fuel pump and pressure you need to tape a gauge to outside windshield or outside mirror and drive it on the road for 20 -30 minutes
until the pump gets has run a while to check for a pump fading out after hot.

Hard to start cold or hot and fuel pressure testing guide lines.
Check cold start fuel pressure.
Check engine running fuel pressure.
Check engine running on the road fuel pressure.
Then shut it off and watch for fast leak down.
Pinch off at rubber part or block off return line and check full pressure.
If pump has full pressure with return line blocked and low pressure without it blocked most usually the fuel pressure regulator is leaking or not holding pressure.
Later V6 and V8 gm engines should have 60-66 fuel pressure.
Cold start should be 64-65 lbs of pressure.
If you do not have full fuel pressure on a cold start the injectors will not squirt fuel.
Do not leave home without it.
Engine running should be 60-66 lbs pressure depending on engine load.
Full pressure with return pinched off should be 75-85 or more.
And if it has a fast leak down after shut off you have a leak in system.
Post back fuel pressure readings.

My brother has a fuel pressure gage, and it showed about 60psi at idle. He rev'ed it up and watched the gage and said it was still good, so we didn't think it was the pump or filter.

You have to take off the intake plenum to get to it. Speaking of the intake plenum, is that difficult to remove? Do you need specialized equipment or tools?

Just throwing parts at it is not a proper fix.
Just hooking up the gauge at idle is not a proper test.

For us to be able to help you.
You need to go threw thew test as posted.
And post back all pressure readings.

In your first post what you describe is low fuel pressure on a cold start.

If you do not have full pressure on a cold start the injectors will not squirt fuel.

You can put 10 spiders on it and it still will not have a good cold start if fuel pressure is low.

What did your mechinc say the restiance problem was?
Did he run a fuel pressure test?
