Doing an engine swap. Donner car is a 95 lincoln town car, victim is a 95 t-bird. So far every thing looks good. Got both engines out and comparing the differences. The only thing i see that i wanted to ask about is the t- bird has an extra temp sensor on the back of that water tube, the one that runs under the intake manifold. Trying to save the customer some money by not replacing the intake gasket and swapping that tube. I know this might seem silly to some, but we are all skid row broke here and don't need to be nickeled and dimmed to death on things like that. Now back to my question. There is two pipe plugs on the back of the head, why can't I just relocate that sensor to the back of the head and be done with it? I'm sure that the harness connector will reach with out a problem.

Coolant Temp sensors:
Air cond
Electric fan
ECU
EGR
Temp guage
Intake temp

When you get it running, see what code pops-up!

I will worry about codes later after I get the car running. The check engine light was on. But the customer stated that it came on only when the engine started knocking. I don't know why it would, but we will see when I get it running again. I did see those egr passages were completely clogged up on the old engine. So surely the check engine light was on all along. I've got to fix the brakes on the car once the engine is done. I will have the kid take the car to auto zone and get a scan, since I don't have that style code scanner. That's on the list of a million other tools I could use around here. 1 down 9 more 4.6 L engines to go. If I sold some more engines I could afford to buy a scan tool.

Wow!
How much do you charge for an engine swap?
I listed on Craigs Local Raleigh, NC. Wanted Engine swap, and nobody was interested.
I would of give $1K + OBDII scanner for just an install deal.

We can use my doner Engine, and you don't need to worry about warranty, liability, or guarantee.

Not- ''As good as once was''

junkyard,
On your donner engine, while you have it out, pull the elbow behind the throttle body and under the gasket find the horseshoe shaped passage to the rear of the intake hole and clean all the carbon out. There should be 3 small passages, one in the rear and one on each end of the arc that let exhaust gas from the egr to the intake. Make sure they are clean, and the small trough that is on the left end,(as you look @ the engine from the front) that leads to the egr. Also check the stainless steel pipe that runs from the egr to the right exhaust pipe, ahead of the cat. Mine was broken. Also check the rubber hose that connects the pcv valve on the right rocker box to the egr. Mine had a hole in it.
good luck.

P.S. I just got a quote for a ford factory rebuilt long block @$2625.00 plus $1200.00 to put it in. For the tx it was $2000.00 plus $1800.00 to install.
And this was the best of 4 quotes in Denver, Colo. I'm still looking though:runaround:

Yep I was going to clean those passages, I know it's a common problem. The T-bird engine bay is so tight that I need to remove that elbow to get to the two top bolts for the transmission any way. The old engine has those passages completely clogged, haven't checked the donner engine yet. I've been swamped with work since Friday and haven't been able to touch it. The plan was to swap everything over on the engines today, and drop the engine back in on Thursday or Friday. I still need to torch the exhaust manifold studs out, and I'm out of oxygen. :banghead:

I usually charge 500 to 1000 for an engine swap. The 4.6 is a difficult job. There is way to many connectors, and hard to get at bolts. Lining up the torque converter to the fly wheel is the most difficult one I have ever run across. Ford left absolutely no room in there. With the torque converter shoved all the way in you need to make sure that you line it up perfectly before you put any bolts in the engine. It's not like the Chevy SB where you can bolt up the engine then reach up in there and spin the converter and line it up into place. Not getting paid for the labor on this one. The kid has no money and he is going to work for me, labor for labor. I've got fencing that needs repairing, storage buildings to paint, tons of weed eating and mowing, wood to split, brush to clear and burn. Money is great but I need help to get all this other stuff done, so it will work out great. That 1200 quote is fair, alot of labor involved on this one. I work slow and it took me all day to get the engine out of the donner car. It took me a day and a half to get the eng. out of the T-Bird. It will probably take another half day to swap all parts around on the engines, and another day to re install and workout any bugs. So we are looking at 4 days labor for me.

Daniel I thought you got rid of that Town Car in cash for clunkers? It is hard to find people to work on things, we live in a lazy society.

Found the problem with the engine. # 8 piston wasn't working. Customer states he ran the car up to 110 MPH with no oil in the engine, I think it's plausible.:sarcasmsign: http://cmasalvage.com/rod1.jpg

Engine is in the t bird and it's running. I had to swap that water tube any way. That temp sensor was too tall to go into the head. Intake manifold is leaking and sucking air big time. My attempt to re seal with the old gasket and silicone didn't work. Will have to get another gasket. No check engine light, no codes.
Had to swap motor mounts, oil pan, oil pick up tube, ps pump, thermostat neck, fuel rail. So much for interchangeable parts on this one.

That t-bird is finally done, thank goodness. It runs perfect. Took me three times as long as I had expected and the car had a bunch of other problems. One more engine swap and I'm done with pulling engines for this year. This one is for me, I've been trying to get to for 3 or 4 years now. I've got a customer who wants me to do one for him, but he will have to wait till spring. I put one in for him last winter, and the dumb ass blew it up already. I am not freezing my ass off again this year. I'm getting too old for this stuff.
