Welcome to the forum!

Any time you post, please provide as many details as appropriate. In this case, the year, engine, and transmission (if you know it) are pretty significant. For example, does your Mountaineer have the 5-speed Automatic or the 4-speed automatic transmission? If we had year and engine, we could deduce the transmission.

Have you checked to make sure the brake lights work? The transmission won't allow the transmission to shift out of park if your foot is not on the brake (although this may depend somewhat on the year of your Mountaineer). Also, if you parked on a steep incline, put the transmission in park, then let the vehicle aggressively roll until the parking prawl within the transmission caught, that could make it quite difficult to shift out of park as well.
