1980 chev with no power

I have a 1980 truck engine in a 1979 truck. The motor was completly rebuilt about ten years 25 000 kms ago. It almost seems like the choke doesn't work when i start it so it runs for a cuples seconds then shuts off. When going down the road if punch it it will accelerate till it switches to the next gear then it looses the power and slowly accelerates. It has an eidelbrock carb and i have no idea where the problem is. the mileag is also really bad. I did the most basic like change spark plugs, time the igntion, put a new air filter in stuf like that. If you know how to get me more horse power with better mileage than what i've got let me know.

It was rebuilt and the guy that rebuilt it put edelbrock carb and intake on it. My guess is that the jets or float level is not set right to what the engine needs.

Did you change fuel filter? Edelbrock rules. you will get better power and gas miles with edelbrock over your orig rochester. If veh wasn't setting I would think fuel pump or filter. you could also have a leaky fuel line = bad gas miles & poor acceleration.Just athought.

Engine and what truck size and transmission and gearrear gears and tires.and what was put in it on rebuild.

As far as gas milege or power you need to get engine to run right.
Gas mile back then was never ver good.
What are you getting now?
What is engine vacuum at idle and at 2K rpm?
