Flywheel Question....

Can someone help me find out or tell me the weight of the stock flywheel/flexplate (which ever it is, don't know too much about it) in my 96 Monte Z34? I wanna go to a lighter one but I can't find anyone that sells any and I wanna know what the stock one is first.

All Monte Carlo's of this era are automatics and have flexplates . Why do you want to go to a lighter one ? I'm not sure I understand what purpose this would serve ? More info would be helpful .

I understand what a lighter one will do for RPM's and driveability for a manual transmission so I don't really need any explanation on that. I guess my question should have been how will a lighter one (flexplate I suppose) affect an automatic transmission. Well I drive a 96 Monte Carlo Z34 and it goes through RPM's slower than this economy's recovery rate. I know a lighter flywheel will help a lot with that, but since my car has a flexplate I guess I'm wondering if going to a lighter one is even an option. I'm not extremely familiar with this stuff, Ive read articles where people say it affected their launches, torque, horsepower, and driveability. Once again though that was all for manual transmissions I believe.

There is no such thing a a lighter flyweel/flexplate for an auto, there are HD racing flex plates that's it. It only weighs 3 lbs to begin with.

There may be lightweight flex plates available for RWD vehicles but I think they would be for race car applications and wouldn't be wise for street use . I don't remember hearing of any such parts for a FWD vehicle . Besides , the torque converter is still going to be filled with fairly heavy transmission fluid ( usually about a gallon ) so any weight savings would be nil . I am not an expert in this area and don't pretend to be . Generally speaking , a flex plate isn't anywhere near as heavy as a typical flywheel so I doubt you'd gain anything by using one on the street . Again , I'm no expert ! Just my :2cents: !

Well that definately helps, I don't know very much about the internals of transmissions. That also explains why I couldn't find anything on the net about lighter flexplates/flywheels. On that note, new question.... What's a relatively cheap and easy way to get my car through the RPM range quicker? Yes more performance parts and horsepower I know, but try finding cheap bolt on parts for this motor. I did the intake but that's as far as I've gotten so far. I just wanna do stuff to this car that isn't gonna cost me thousands cuz I don't have it, and stuff that I'm actually gonna notice a difference in my car's performance. For now that is, eventually I'm gonna totally rebuild this motor or put in a 3.8 supercharged motor.
