When I got my van (mileage: 113000), the low fuel light comes on at random regardless of the amount of gas in the car. The actual guage is accurate, and when filled up sometimes the guage would read empty but correct itself within 3 power ups. This problem went away by itseld after about 10k miles, (123000). The miledge is now at 130000 and the problem has returned. It happens sometimes when the tank is filled or turning sharply or stopping abruptly. It would seem the a float/sensor is the problem but why intermittent and why not at all for 7k miles?

Mine has been doing something similar for years. Fill it up and for the first 1/8th tank the needle will dip, chime chimes, and the light turns on. Then it will recover in seconds. Then 20 seconds or 2 minutes later it will repeat. It will do this for several weeks then it will be fine for months. I just ignore it. I'm not going to mess with it until I see a hard fail. Yes, it's the pump/sender unit in the tank - hence, I live with it.
Why so intermittent? My guess is the switch builds corrosion bringing on the problem. As the switch continues to switch on and off, the corrosion wears away and all is well for a while. Other than that I chaulk it up to Chrysler (Fiatsler??) wondertronics.
